Sarah Esser - Artistic Director
Sarah Esser is a dancer & choreographer based in Manhattan. Originally from San Francisco, she studied ballet, modern, & hip hop at Academy of Ballet San Francisco, ODC, & the San Francisco Conservatory of Dance, as well as Studio Harmonic & Centre de danse du Marais in Paris. Studying dance & women's leadership, Esser graduated magna cum laude & Phi Beta Kappa from Barnard College, where her research focused on the intersection of feminist leadership & improvisation. She has performed works by Sidra Bell, Alex Ketley, Mark Morris, Robert Moses, Pam Tanowitz, Twyla Tharp, & Colleen Thomas. She currently dances for TREES, a company of musicians & dancers interested in collaboration, & The Neighbors, a competitive hip hop team based in New York City.
Esser has choreographed for Raw Elementz & the Columbia Ballet Collaborative, & was the associate choreographer for BACCHANAL (2013), an immersive theatre rendition of Euripedes' The Bacchae directed by Jamie McGonagill. She founded era in January 2012. Check out http://sarahesser.com/ for more.
